THE DREAM:

I don’t tend to talk about dreams, because they’re a “had to be there to get it” sort of experience for me. But this one made me laugh so I’ll share.

First, you should know I’m a lucid dreamer. I almost always know I’m dreaming. I also wake up a lot during the night, so I am up out of dreams, then back down into them, or into new dreams several times a night.

I spent back-to-back dreams trying to find the most dangerous bird. I needed to put the bird in something I was writing, and I couldn’t decide if a heron was the most dangerous (it’s tall! it’s pointy! <–dream logic), or if something like an eagle or vulture or condor would be the most dangerous bird.

By the end of the second dream, I still hadn’t figured out the most dangerous bird, so I drifted up out of the dream, was semi-awake for a bit, then drifted back down into the dream to go solve the problem.

But instead of landing in the dream, I landed in a blank space with a door in front of me. The dream hadn’t started yet. I was in a dream lobby. On that lobby door (which I’d have to go through to start the dream) was a yellow sticky note.

On the sticky note was written:

“NEVER UNDERESTIMATE DUCKS” –Neil Gaiman

Ha! That made me laugh and woke me up and I spent the rest of the night chuckling about getting a critique note/scene note/suggestion from Dream Neil Gaiman.

In case you’re wondering, no, I’ve never met Neil Gaiman. But from now on, I’ll never underestimate ducks. (The most dangerous of all birds) 😉

Ducks may be especially sneaky, because they have such kind eyes. But swans…man, those swans are mean.
