Getting Our Kicks – Day 1

I don’t actually know what to expect. For all that I’m a fantasy writer, I’m a realist. I know Route 66 is not what it used to be, nor has it been what we’ve imagined it once was. Still, there’s something about this road. There is something about the time in which it was born, used, abandoned. There is something about the vehicles, the people, and the dreams it has carried.

My husband and I are driving Route 66. The Mother Road. From Chicago to Santa Monica. In eleven days. And we’re trying to see as much of the Route as we can.

I’ll try to jot down my thoughts on the experience each night.

Day One, Take One – Our goal–get to Chicago, walk about, dinner, sleep, start our drive.

A five hour delay (7 hours of waiting in an airport, starting at 3:00 am) had us juggling our plans. We did get to Chicago. We found our hotel, got dinner at the closest place that was open, then called it a night. Maybe not the day we planned, but at least we got to our starting point.

Day One Take Two – Our goal–get to Springfield, Illinois. Drive the road. Find silly things to pose with.

Yes! We stayed on Route 66 via one map book, one online map, Google Maps, Waze, and a list of hastily scribbled notes I made when we planned our trip. Planning is a must. A MUST must. Like, if I hadn’t taken those notes, we’d be lost in a cornfield somewhere right now, searching for a dinosaur. Or ice cream. (Probably ice cream.)

I won’t bore you with the details, cause I’m gonna throw a pile of pictures in this post now, but just let me say, we had a great day and only got lost like six or twenty times. The only thing that could have been better is if there had been more daylight.

Now, the important stuff: PHOTOS!! More or less in order.

The start: right there on Adam in Chicago. We walked down to get the pic, since parking is tricky. Then back to the hotel to start the drive.

Great pictures. My family did a Route 66 trip in 1956 when I was 10. We started from Havre Montana, but hooked up and did the whole thing. I still remember some of the 66 sights that are gone now. What a fabulous trip to take. I’m glad lots of the sights are still available.

What fun!!! Some of those photos are hysterical. Have a great time and getting lost six or twenty times may not be so bad. 🙂

I was a Navy Wife. I have done a lot of driving back and forth across this country. We always tried to find roadside attractions and quirky things to amuse ourselves and the kids. I am also a camera buff. If I spotted something interesting I am likely to make the husband pull over so I could take pictures. I love do this sort of thing.
