The Cubes

A couple months ago I asked around on various social media, looking for solutions to my yarn storage problem. Things had gotten so bad, every time I waded into my mighty stash, it triggered an avalanche.

People offered a lot of good ideas (thank you!) Here’s what I needed:

  1. To see my yarn while it is stored
  2. To contain the yarn so when I pull a skein, three more don’t fall out
  3. To access yarn by color (not weight or fiber content)
  4. To use the wooden cubby things I bought a decade ago because they fit in my tiny sewing/craft room/pantry

Turns out #3 was the important. I knit toys (mostly) and toys are all about the color for me. To knit a bee, or cat or Yoda, I need to know if I have bee, cat, or Yoda colors.

Yarn weight is secondary for me as a toy maker, as is fiber content. (Acrylic is machine washable and colorful! I also adore wool and natural fibers and weird sparkly and furry things! I love all the yarn. All. The. Yarn.)

Luckily, I found these light weight, collapsable, translucent 12 x 12 cubes. They work like a charm! It took me three days to sort everything into colors, plus a cube of multi color, and a cube of “novelty” yarn (and that big ol’ pile of Red Heart up there on top) but I am so happy with how it turned out!

No more avalanches!

Oh, and bonus–the cubes are pretty full. If I want new yarn, I’ll just have to knit myself some space for it!

Look at those yarn cubes!
