Cthulhu Lip Balm Buddy

Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) dpn
Yarn: DK weight small amount green, small amount red
Gauge: 10 stitches = 2.5 inches

Abbreviations:
co: cast on
dpn: double pointed needles
k: knit
k1f&b: knit 1 stitch in the front, then in the back. Increases by 1 stitch
k3tog: knit 3 stitches together
sl1k: slip 1 stitch knit wise
sl1, k1, psso: slip1, knit1, pass the slipped stitch over.
sssk: slip, slip, slip, knit 3 slipped stitches together. A double decrease
wyib: with yarn in back
wyif: with yarn in front
Finger knit: make slip knot, pull yarn through, tighten, pull the yarn through the new loop, tighten.

Lip balm tubes are approx 2 inches (5 cm) in circumference. The cozy should be just slightly larger–about 2.5 inches, but not too loose.

CTHULHU BODY
Co 10 stitches on 3 dpns, leaving a 5 inch tail of yarn. Join in the round, careful not to twist stitches.

Row 1-17: k
Row 18: Work one-row button hole for mouth:
wyif, sl1k to right needle.
wyib, sl1, k1, psso, 5 times
You should now have 5 stitches on your needles.
Put the last slipped stitch on the right needle back on the left needle.
Turn work.
wyib, co 6 stitches (put needle beneath stitch on left needle, pull yarn under stitch, then place the yarn on needle above the stitch on left needle. Do this 6 times.)
Turn work.
Sl1, k1, You should now have 10 stitches on your needles.
k5 to end of row

Row 19: k5, k1f&b, k1, k1f&b, k1, k1f&b
You should now have 13 stitches on your needles
Row 20-25: k
Cut yarn leaving 8″ tail
With tapestry needle, pull yarn through remaining stitches. Sew top of head closed, pass thread inside “head” do not cut thread (you will use it to sew on the tentacles)

TENTACLES
Finger knit 16 loops, cut yarn, knot last loop
Finger knit 12 loops, cut yarn, knot last loop
Finger knit 10 loops, cut yarn, knot last loop
Fold three strands of finger knit tentacles in half and arrange to your satisfaction. Hold tentacles in a “v” over top center of mouth. Using the thread inside the head (from sewing the top) sew center “v” of tentacles to top lip of mouth.

EYES
With red worsted weight yarn and tapestry needle sew one diagonal stitch for each eye.

Body:
Sew closed bottom of body with tail of cast on yarn. Lip balm should be able to pass snugly, but easily, through mouth with just the cap showing when the head is pulled back.

WINGS
CO 8 (you’ll be knitting flat with 2 needles)
Row 1: k8
Row 2: k8
Row 3: k2, psso, k4, slk1
Row 4: k3tog, sssk
You should have 2 stitches on your needle
Row 5: m2, (put needle beneath first stitch on left needle, pull yarn under stitch, then place the yarn on needle above the stitch on left needle.) k3, m2, k3
You should have 6 stitches on your needle
Row 6: kf&b, k4, kf&b
You should have 8 stitches on your needle
Row 7: k8
Row 8: cast off.

With tapestry needle and yarn, sew wings on back of Cthulhu.
Attach key ring to back (above wings, but below head.)

    Your Soapthulu pattern is great, but, what does ‘pu’ mean? It is not included in your list of abreviations. I love soapthulu, but am stuck at ‘pu’. Please help so I can finish it and put it in my shower for my soap
