I'm going to let you in on a little secret here. I'm nervous. When I get nervous I tend toward being really quiet and holding very still. But sometimes being nervous can be because of a great thing. It can be because I'm very excited about something. This is one of those exciting times. I'm e-publishing a new Shame and Terric book. BACK LASH is the third book with these two characters at the helm and it comes out on November 12th. If you haven't read the first two books: HELL BENT and STONE COLD--no worries. This book takes place a year after Stone Cold, and I wrote it to stand on its own two feet. This book also marks my first step into ebook-first publishing and that's been a fun new experience. Here is the summary from the back of the cover: Magic isn’t a blessing with drawbacks, it’s a curse with upsides. Shame Flynn and Terric Conley hadn't meant to become the living, breathing vessels for Death and Life magic. But they hadn't meant to die, be reborn, break magic, save the world, and kill a few psychopaths along the way, either. The one thing they had meant to do was to seal magic away so it could never be used to kill again. When a string of dead bodies–people killed by magic–appear throughout Portland, Oregon, Shame and Terric must scramble to uncover who broke the locks on magic and how. Before Terric’s sister becomes the next target. Before the Russian mob locks them in their sights. Before the question of who can control magic is decided by bullets and blood. I'm so excited to share this story with you all. If you are a reviewer, and would like to read and review BACK LASH, please contact me. (email button here on my web page works best). Oh, and stay tuned! On Monday, November 9th, I'll do the official cover reveal.
Over the last year or so, readers have asked me if I'm going to finish the Age of Steam steampunk series. As it stands now, there are three novels and one short story in the series, um...in this order: 1.DEAD IRON 1.5. HANG FIRE (short story, Kindle only at this point) 2. TIN SWIFT 3. COLD COPPER If you've read these novels, you know there is an almost-guaranteed plot for 7 books, what with all the bits of that pesky world-destroying device our heroes need to find. At the end of Cold Copper, things really take a turn toward the interesting. There is certainly more story to tell. So where is book #4? When I pitched DEAD IRON, I was contracted for two books, releasing on a once-a-year schedule. At that time, I was also writing two-books-a-year in the Allie Beckstrom series. The Age of Steam books take a bit of research, and I prefer a little slower writing pace when I'm putting them together. Nonetheless, I happily wrote these books in between the Allie books with a love and passion that I hope shows on the page. These characters are important to me. Fun to be around. Ornery. I love them like the dickens. But by the time we were negotiating the single-book contract for book #3, the market for steampunk had shifted fairly drastically, and sales were not climbing. My editor and publisher still believed in the series, and so did I, so we found a way to get Cold Copper into the hands of readers. My publisher didn't cancel the series. As a matter of fact, they have dibs on seeing the next book in the series when I write it. That's right: when. There are four more books in this series. I plan to write them. Some of you have gone out of your way to tell me how much you've enjoyed the trouble Cedar, Mae, Hink, Rose, Wil and those wily Madder brothers get themselves into. I can't tell you how much those comments have meant to me. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have the best readers in the world! The "how" of writing another steampunk book is another question. Right now, I'm writing book #3 in the House Immortal series--a new trilogy with books coming out this September, next March, then September again. I am also finishing off proofs for book #1, and have revisions for book #2 right around the corner. Then there will be revisions for book #3, copy edits for books #2 & #3, more proofs, etc., etc.. So this year is out for writing another book. My hope (and at this point, it's a hope not a promise) is that I can write the next steampunk in 2015. Where it will be published, how it will be published, and when it will be published is very much up in the air. But I will keep all of you in the loop as the adventure unfolds.
This:I turned in the revisions for HOUSE IMMORTAL a week ago! Yay! Even though it was a pretty massive revision (I axed over 43,000 words, removed two characters, inserted a new character, shifted the side plots and re-wrote scenes from scratch...while also keeping all the cool stuff from the first version) I think the revision packed the book with even more fun, action, and daring-do! Right now I am so very pleased with how this book turned out. Which is pretty normal for me at this stage of a book's life. By the time it hits the shelves in September, I'll be neurotically worried that it sucks, but right now, I know it's a strong, good book with strong, good characters in a new, exciting world. Oh, and HOUSE IMMORTAL is now available for pre-order. Next up in my writing queue is to get cracking on book #2 in the House Immortal series. That's due in a little over a month, which means I'll be writing like a crazy writing-thing to hit the deadline.
That:A couple questions from readers: 1. When is HELL BENT, book #1 in the Broken Magic (Shame and Terric) spin off from the Allie Beckstrom books going to be available in ebook in the UK? Right now! Here's an Amazon link. 2. When is STONE COLD, book #2 in the Broken Magic (Shame and Terric) spin off from the Allie Beckstrom books coming out? April 1, 2014. Yes! So soon! 3. Are you going to give away any advance reader copies of Stone Cold? Funny you should ask......

I don't know about you, but around here it felt like the new year didn't *really* start until Monday the 6th. So here I am 9 days into the new year and it feels like we've only had 2014 rolling for about three days. Last post, I talked a little about what I had gotten done writing-wise in 2013. In this post, I'll take a best-guess at what is coming out in 2014.
BooksSTONE COLD - book #2 of the Broken Magic series (Shame & Terric books) Release day: April 1, 2014 This is book #2 and the end of the two-book spinoff from the Allie Beckstrom series. Book #1 HELL BENT is quite a bit darker than the Allie books since Shame lives a darker life than Allie ever would. After all, he is Death magic incarnate. In STONE COLD...well, things get darker. Due to choices made and actions taken, Shame and Terric come up against some hard odds in this book. On their search for justice (okay, maybe for revenge too) quite a bit of bad stuff happens. But one of the things I love about Shame and Terric is that they never give in. No matter how dark things seem, they never stop fighting for what is right for magic, their city, and the people they care about. TIN SWIFT - book #2 of the Age of Steam series Release day - June 3, 2014 TIN SWIFT has been out for a bit, and my awesome publisher is re-releasing it in the smaller (cheaper) paperback size! I'm very excited about that, because I love paperbacks! This book follows the adventures of Cedar Hunt, Rose Small, Mae Lindson, Captain Hink, and the wily Madder brothers as they trek across America looking for the lost pieces of a strange weapon that could destroy the nation, while something even stranger hunts them. A steampunk adventure chock-full of airships, wild devices, guns and gears. HOUSE IMMORTAL - book #1 of the House Immortal series Release Day - September 2014 You read that right! I have a new 3-book series coming out! The first book, HOUSE IMMORTAL will be on the shelves in September. What can I say about these books? They are fantasy with a strong female lead. I describe them as: near-future, Frankenstein farm girl, gently dystopic, steampunk-light, save-the-world books. My editor called them "Allie Beckstrom meets Firefly" and I sort of love her description even more! Here, let me share the back cover copy for the book: One hundred years ago, eleven powerful ruling Houses consolidated all of the world’s resources and authority into their own grasping hands. Only one power wasn’t placed under the command of a single House: the control over the immortal galvanized… Matilda Case isn’t like most folk. In fact, she’s unique in the world, the crowning achievement of her father’s experiments, a girl pieced together from bits. Or so she believes until Abraham Seventh shows up at her door, stitched with life thread just like her and insisting that enemies are coming to kill them all. Tilly is one of thirteen incredible creations known as the galvanized, stitched together beings, immortal and unfathomably strong. For a century, each House has controlled the galvanized. Only now, the Houses are tangled in a deadly struggle for dominion over death—and Tilly and her kind hold the key to unlocking eternity. The secrets Tilly must fight to protect are hidden within the very seams of her being. And to get them, her enemies are willing to tear her apart piece by piece… Of course, I have some other writing projects up my sleeves that I hope to announce soon. So please stayed tuned, and thank you, thank you for reading!
Here's how 2013 shook out for me:
